PH and Hygiene of the Vulva (Genital) Area

Vaginal Ecosystem The vaginal cavity is a septic cavity: 108 to 109 germs/ml of secretion. The vaginal flora depends on estrogenic impregnation. It changes according to age. Many other factors can alter its balance. Vaginal pH is antifungal but not antibacterial. Contributing Factors to infection . Aggressive hygiene is a factor that renders the vulva area more fragile. . Insufficient hygiene or a high local temperature cause: - Maceration of physiological secretions - Development of anaerobic germs and secretions of irritating aromatic amines · Frequent sexual intercourse, tight clothing, nylon undergarments, · Iatrogenic factors : Tampons, vaginal douches, spermicides, mechanical contraception, prolonged use of intimate hygiene products not adapted to alcaline pH, use of certain bath products, soaps, sprays, scented drawer liners, sweetened foods or diabetes. . Chlorinated pools, . Iron and zinc deficiency , . Stress... What to Avoid Vaginal douches, vulvar antiseptic other than short medical treatments, synthetic undergarments or tight clothing, sharing toilet linens and bathing suits, staying in a wet bathing suit, calcareous water and repetitive soaping, deodorants and baths with essential oils, panty liners or sanitary napkins, with plastic film, wearing internal protection when experiencing a vaginal infection, sexual contact during menstruation, which increases the risk of infection, anal intercourse followed by vaginal intercourse without taking proper hygienic precautions in between... What You Should Do Do not clean more than twice daily, wear cotton undergarments, wash undergarments in an adapted laundry detergent in 60° water, change undergarments daily, wipe front to back after urinating or having a bowel movement, favour baths over showers or limit the lengths of your baths, dry the vulva using a clean towel or hair dryer, use adapted products (pH 5.2 or 5.5), change pads and tampons regularly... Conclusion - Intimate Hygiene: Use cleansing product with a pH of 5.5 (genital mucous membranes), clean the intimate area twice daily, from front to back, no toilet gloves. - Treatment of pathologies: Medical prescription, specific hygiene products (if necessary). - At the end of the treatment: return to using products with a pH of 5.5. - A non-adapted product could be the source of new pathologies: drying of the vulva, irritation, itching...
